Senior Photos 101
Back in my day senior photos were just yearbook images. Yes, I just said, “back in my day” =) But, seriously the options now a days are way more fun, and way more exciting and can be ultimately anything you want! Literally, any style you want to accomplish, the sky is the limit!
I love senior photos! They are pretty much my fave sessions! Seniors are extremely opened to any ideas I come up with, and because my style is very editorial driven, we definitely make sure the shoot feels like it came off the latest Teen Vogue, or Seventeen magazine.
So what’s the experience?
Alright, let’s get to the details..
So it starts out with you inquiring about a shoot. We figure out we both love the same music, and clothes, and now what, right!! So ultimately my goal is for us to be besties, and for you to feel utterly completely comfortable when I am shooting. If music helps create the mood, I will have my IPhone ready and Pandora blasting for your entertainment. Whatever it is, we will get it done!
For your shoot we figure out two locations. Preferably these locations will be nearby one another. Once we square out the locations, we will than figure out what your favorite hobbies are, and what defines your style and lifestyle at this age (so, this is important, because ultimately you want your senior photos to reflect where you were at at this point in your life, and how you looked, what you liked, and just something fun to reminiscent about). For example if you are a gypsy soul that loves water anything. We will probably do some photos at a nearby downtown coastal area (so seeking really cool wall patterns, and colors) and than perhaps we will incorporate the water into our shoot, either being in it, or doing some sort of water activity in it.
If you are more into glamour and just really want a soft and feminine shoot. We could send our gears more to maybe an arboretum or garden setting. I’ll play on blooming flowers, and maybe we will figure out outfit choices that are really pretty and dainty. Dresses, floral shorts, or pants, cute tops and accenting with fun jewelry.
What if I am an out state client? For out of state shoots I like to use google maps. This way I can scout locations virtually and still build a location map of where we will be and how your ideas will come into play. Traveling is not an issue at all when planning our senior shoot.
To makeup or not to makeup?
I think because your getting your photo’s done and it’ll be something special, I suggest getting your hair and makeup done professionally. It will just add to the look of the images and also make you feel camera ready. I can definitely provide some suggestions of my favorite makeup artist and hair to give you a new fresh look for your shoot. If you feel like you got this, don’t hesitate to test it out a day or week prior to the shoot to make sure your in love with your idea.
Also something we will go over is your wardrobe choices for the shoot. Accessories are always a must, so the more pieces you have to play an outfit, the better the image is. Feeling stumped on your wardrobe ideas, check out your fave magazine, or use Pinterest for inspiration.
(Seriously though, Pinterest is like a gal’s best friend 🙂 )
How I pose…
In terms of posing, you can kinda get an idea of my posing through some examples below, and of course examples in my other work. I love lifestyle editorial images. Our movements will be talked through and Ill be snapping photos of you doing actions or moving into a pose. You’ll hardly ever be in a statue format. I love fun images, so we will laugh and I’ll do my best to make you laugh to get those candid and genuine moments.
So, if you are someone who doesn’t feel comfortable in front of the camera, no worries! I’ll guide you through it! And, if you are confident and you want to try some new things, we can so do this too!!
After the shoot..
After the shoot, you will receive a digital gallery of your images. You can share these on facebook, twitter, instagram, on a blog, with a neighbor, with a family member, whomever you choose! The turn around for your images is two weeks. A final copy of your images is than placed onto a USB or a DVD format.
To get in idea of the type of shoot you could have, check out the examples below, and I can’t wait to share your ideas and get your senior session started!
This throwback is one of my favorites, and as I look at my blog posts, I realized I may have not blogged about this special shoot!
Once in a while the stars align and I get a magical shooting concept. Sam and Shauna are best friends, they are the cutest together. They are the epitome of friendship. Lucky for me these girls were up for whatever ideas I had running through my head. So, with that said they wanted to have a shoot that showcased their individual personalities at this point in time of their lives, and also get images that could be keepsakes of their friendship.
We had the idea of doing a very much lifestyle of summer shoot… So with that concept I ran with it and incorporated their love for one another, summer, and fun and we got this magical shoot that we got to execute at Wrightsville Beach, NC. Originally I had thought, Bald Head Island would play a nice backdrop, but because of the ferry schedules, we decided to stay close. And Wrightsville Beach, really was the perfect spot! So, we had all the items that make summer, summer.. Watermelon, surfboards, sun, the ocean, kayaks, a hammock, a beautiful beach house to shoot at, and great friends, what more could you ask for?!
Here are a few of my faves of that fun session! Cheers to summer being in the near future! =)
A few weeks ago a dad inquired about senior photography for his daughter. As you can imagine this is uncommon since most of the time I deal with either the senior or her mom. I was extremely excited to do so. Sam’s dad is a family friend of my husband’s family. And also a previous co-worker of mine. My husband’s mom used to baby sit Sam as a baby. So you can imagine she’s in a few family albums. I remembered seeing pictures of her as a baby thinking how gorgeous she was. So when I was able to book this session, I was super excited to photograph her for her senior photos.
Sam is a senior at E.A. Laney high school. I could have not asked for a better young lady to showcase my skills. Sam had specified she wanted Wrightsville Beach as her backdrop for her session. So with that said I went to work. I spent the weeks leading up to her session searching for special locations that exemplified the location without necessarily just showing water and some sand.
In order for me to create the perfect session, Sam and I communicated daily till her session date. We discussed what props she wanted to use. We talked about those special photo’s her parents wanted. And also spoke about her wardrobe and her style. This definitely allowed me to properly prepare for her session. Without all the details I had acquired from her emails, and texts, we could have not created a session that truly showed her personality. She gave me so much information and options with her clothing that we actually had to condense our ideas to fit it into our time schedule. Sam, was extremely open with her wardrobe and definitely bounced all her ideas off me. All her wardrobe choices definitely were synced to all the special locations we were going to shoot at.
Through our lengthy emails I found out that she was an athlete. She is a six foot beauty who plays basketball, and volleyball. She is extremely well spoken, and a vibrant young lady. When I finally met her on Saturday evening all my assumptions of her personality were all true. Sam was beaming the minute I saw her on our session day. She was rocking her hair and makeup from Belks Carmen! Carmen! which was styled By Laurel Cain.
As our session progressed she became more and more natural in front of the camera. She was extremely cooperative, a great listener, and followed directions effortlessly. She made me giggle, laugh out loud a few times, and I absolutely adored my time with her. We talked about her future, her life, and how excited we both were that the weather was holding up for our session. It was a little cloudy and gloomy and thankfully the light that was produced was gorgeous for our shooting time. I always feel like I’m hanging out with my little sister with my senior girls, and this time was not any different. I absolutely adored Sam’s soft heart, and carefree nature. She truly is someone you would be lucky to know and that will do great things in the future.
She made my life as senior photographer the easiest it could have been!
Samantha aka Sam aka Sammie! You have the whole world at your fingertips girlie, grasp it and ride it till the end! 🙂
