The golden hour is best for glowing waterfront portraits. The absolute best time for portraits in Southport is golden hour. This is the hour right before sunset (or the hour right after sunrise). The vibe is warm, soft, orange light. If we are starting earlier in the day, Southport luckily has beautiful streets that are lined with oaks that provide beautiful shade and this is a great start to when we have more of harsh light.
Southport sits right where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean, so it is almost always breezy.
When shooting there, we embrace the wind! We will move with the wind and not against it. I recommend hairstyles that look great with a little movement (like loose waves or half-up styles). If you have long hair, bring a few bobby pins or a cute clip just in case the wind picks up near the water.
Southport is a popular spot for tourists, especially during the summer months. The best time to shoot is to shoot during the week or off season. Weekend evenings get very busy with diners and tourists, making it trickier to get clear backgrounds. So planning is definitely a must.
